Last Friends Updated Batch

I know. It’s been almost a decade. But I couldn’t let this show die. I found our old subs, a friend found some 1080p raws, and now, we finally bring you an updated release for Last Friends! We’re seeding it from a server this time, so the torrent won’t die anytime soon.

Even though I quit fansubbing back in 2018, I came out of retirement for a few weeks to make this happen. Since our original release, I got married, had a wonderful and energetic son, and now work full-time at a university while being a mother. Life is chaotic, but fun.

Maki’s life is mostly the same. He’s got a few more degrees as he’s explored what he wants to do with his life. Like me, he’s eternally drawn to academia, so he’s looking to find a job in the higher education field.

Special thanks to dbx10, a friend I met when I worked in EveTaku, for helping me find the raws, mux the subs, and seed this final release. I’m so grateful to still have such great friends and resources even though I left the fansubbing scene.

Nana is freelech at Animebytes!

As you know, our Nana torrents are mostly dead here due to lack of seeding capability on our part. However, if you’re a member of Animebytes, you may know that Nana is the Anime of the Fortnight. That means you can download our batch from an extremely well-seeded torrent, and it won’t count against your ratio!

I do want to make note of something: everyone keeps citing the source of our subs, but not mentioning that we edited them. If you would do a side by side comparison of the scripts, you’ll see that there are severe changes in over half of the lines. Editing each episode was a major effort, so please don’t think that we just muxed the Ureshii scripts on Utsukushii’s encodes. We may have had daily releases for awhile, but a lot of work went into them!

There are new scenes!

Here’s 90 minutes of totally-not-recaps! I mean, there are some few scenes! Like 20 minutes worth!

I actually think they did a really good job with the special. For one, they finally resolved a few of the loose ends with some of the characters. I mean, who wouldn’t appreciate that?

There’s totally another special titled “Eri, My Love”, but it doesn’t seem to exist anywhere on the interwebs, and plus, we don’t have a translation for it, so we’re totally skipping it. That is, unless someone decides to find a raw and script for us…

Maki did a great job with his last post acknowledging everyone, but I’d like to add one more thanks — to him! He came back after I rage-stalled the project due to no QC and fucking up the first release. You’re the best ever! Come out of your haitus soon!

As for me, I’m in every group that exists, so you’ll surely see my work somewhere! (Evetaku, FFF, UTW, SHiN-gx, Sekushi, Sage, Whine, GotWoot…)

Last Friends – Episode Eleven

Another final episode, another Maki release post.

I originally came back to Jinsei to help Caly clear this show off the backlog, I’d heard good things about if from her but I didn’t approach the show with any sort of expectation. Now we’ve come to the end of its run, I can confidently say I was pleasantly surprised. I can see why it garnered the accolades it did in Japan. There are a LOT of sensitive issues dealt with in the show, and for the most part, it was well executed.

I’m not without my reservations. There were certain aspects that annoyed me, Caly and I had more than one conversation regarding Sousuke and how he was portrayed. I also felt some of the characters were a little weak, and some of the resolutions angered me a little. But if it’s gotten to the point where I can get worked up over how things have turned out, then surely that indicates that I’ve been drawn in, at least part of me is invested in the story. This is a good thing, and testament to the writers/producers of the show.

We have the special ep in the works, it’s mostly recap but there are several minutes of unaired footage and we’re sure you’d want it for completist’s sake anyway. I’m probably going to go into subbing retirement again, but Caly has a project in the works so you should continue to check your RSS feeds for news from Jinsei. She has a heap of work to do right now so it might be a while before she starts, but it’ll be worth waiting for.

If she stalls it too much I’ll just come back and motivate her to finish again 😉

Because we’re a Western now!

I was this close of picking a picture of Takeru, but decided that I wanted to keep up with pictures of just the girls.

We’re heading towards the end now. Two more episodes, and then we’ll be done. However, we do have scripts for the special episode, just not a raw. We’ll do more searching when it’s time to work on it, but the reason why we decided to do this show in the first place is because 720p sources aren’t very common. In fact, it’s so rare, I haven’t even seen the special episode!

Last Friends – Episode Seven

Some people don’t deserve children.

Some pretty harrowing scenes this week. If the situation with Sousuke and the boy strikes a chord with you, you should check out a film called Dare Mo Shiranai (Nobody Knows) which was based on a real-life case of child abandonment from the 80s. The film is a little bit too long (in my opinion), but very moving and evocative.

Caly’s out for Summer, which means she’s back on third world internet at home again. Long story short, she can’t upload the ep for release, so the next ep (which is finished, incidentally) will be released some time next week, when she’s able to abuse her ‘work’ bandwidth. We’ll try and have another double release ready for you or whatever.
